DuoLingo or Duo lingo is a great language learning app I have been using it for some time now and it really helps! But once you run out of hearts you have to wait for them to refill or buy their “plus” which gives you unlimited hearts etc. for 12.99 a month which is fine I guess for what you would get but I don’t want to pay 13 dollars a month for an app, Duo lingo is a great app but that was my problem with it would recommend though!

  • Too Much Monetization

    By Marioscout
This is a protest review concerning the Challenger achievement and the XP Ramp Up Challenge, neither of which are conducive to actual language learning and instead are just meant to milk achievement hunters for currency and real money. It’s a bad sign when Duolingo’s wasting time implementing predatory monetization practices that’re all too common on the App Store. Remove Challenger or dramatically decrease its XP requirements and I’ll rescind my review and rating.
  • Do not install! Emotionally Abusive.

Do you want to feel so anxious about making mistakes that you don’t dare try speaking a language without it written out ahead of time? Do you like failing a lessons because the answers the hints give you sometimes aren’t even right? Do you want to become so enraged by making tiny mistakes that it seems healthier just to not even try and just ask your multi-lingual to translate for you? Do you like being punished for mistakes? If so Duolingo is the app for you! They only give you 5 mistakes a day. Five. I have now failed the same lesson two or three days in a row because of a differentiation between two words with nearly identical meanings and ONE LETTER DIFFERENCE. The difference in usage is NEVER EXPLAINED. The explanation given says they mean the same thing but IT STILL FAILS YOU FOR USING THE WRONG ONE AND NEVER SAYS WHY IT’S WRONG. Don’t use Duolingo unless you want to learn to hate language learning. They have changed their originally amazing, free app, and their new system is just greedy and mean. They try to emotionally and psychologically exploit you into buying an $80 a year subscription, all while bragging about how noble they are for promoting free learning. They are the very worst sort of silicon valley culture. Now you get 5 mistakes a day, and then you’re done. That includes typos. That includes accidental thumb-flubs. That includes NOT KNOWING THE WORDS TO A LANGUAGE YOU DON’T SPEAK. And when you run out of “hearts”, you’re presented with a choice: fork over $80 for a subscription or you fail the lesson and you make Duo cry. I’m not even joking. Your options are “subscribe” or “end lesson” and if you press “end lesson” you are treated to a cartoon image of Duo crying. You failed. You made Duo cry. Pay us money. It’s emotional extortion wrapped up in a child-friendly bow. The whole system is built on emotional manipulation, from the fear of losing your streak to the competition boards that you can’t opt out of to the crying cartoon owl to the judgmental reactions of the cartoon characters when you get a question wrong. It’s emotionally abusive and patently unethical in an app targeted at children. Duolingo should be ashamed of themselves. This was once a great app. Now it’s a crappy, exploitative freemium game. I hate how hard they push the $80 subscription fee but it’s not that I want something for nothing: even the free version is stuffed with ads. Ads before every lesson. Video ads after every lesson. Ads you can watch to get more hearts. That density of ads should be enough to support their company even without the subscriptions and their educational partnerships. Shame on you Duolingo. Shame on you.
