  • Love the Author, But Not Yet The App

I read the 9th edition of Maui Revealed (book) nearly cover to cover. I was excited to learn about the app in the book because while we found the Kauai Revealed book indispensable on our trip 12+ years ago, we longed for a GPS-enabled companion as the directions in the book are sometimes hard to follow. I downloaded the free version of the app to try it out but decided against purchasing the subscription due to the below. First, let me say that I read the COVID article linked from the home page and found it even more thorough than what I had been able to gather from my own Internet research. That is good information you need for getting to the island. I also found the author’s writing as delightful as the book when I read the post about his maitai recipe. I laughed out loud more than once. Here’s what’s giving me pause about buying the full content subscription: 1. With as much of the island closed for COVID as the author indicates, I would think having up-to-the-minute feedback from users experiencing Maui firsthand would be important. Unfortunately the feedback form built into the app simply doesn’t work - it refuses to deliver the feedback. In short, you can’t ask a question, nor can you provide any feedback on the accuracy of the info. All you get is an error from the form. 2. I know the author lives in Hawaii but with as fluid a situation as we have with COVID I would think adding a feedback button on each activity/sight/etc to provide COVID open/closed info would be helpful. 3. Downloading and installing the 381MB map was painful. I have gigabit Internet and it still took several minutes. It also had to restart every time I left the app and returned to check progress. It doesn’t work in the background and it can’t pick up where it left off! God help you if you discovered that the map had to be downloaded after you left WiFi on your adventure. 4. On the map, you tap a spot and then it asks you the category of things you’re looking for nearby. I tapped near Kihei and the three closest beaches, despite appearing ON THE MAP, were not listed in the results. This might be premium content included in the subscription, but there’s no indication of that in the search results. This made me worry that the app is simply malfunctioning. If this is premium content, simply have a stub entry for it so users are not led to believe that many of the island’s features are not covered. Bottom line: I hope Yelp covers Maui well because it looks like that might be a better bet than the subscription for up-to-the minute COVID open/closed info.
  • Like the book, hate the app

I want reviews for Lanai hotels. The books says that the hotels are reviewed in the free section of the app. When applying filters to find Lanai hotels, there was nothing in Lanai. I found the section for outer islands but couldn’t access info for Lanai unless I paid the the app subscription. I paid the $17.99, read about Lanai (which was basically what I read in the book) and it said hotel reviews are in the free section. They are not. Waste of money. Waste of time.
  • Buy the book, skip the app

I bought the book and thought the app would be easier to use. It struggled to download and was very difficult to use. Would stick to the book. I only used the app for about 15 minute before giving up.
  • Won’t download

Book is great, app is crap? I have tried 3 times now and it still does not load on my phone
  • Nothing opens

    By too frustrated with this
Loaded the app but all I get is a tutorial that is about 6 screens long on how to use the app. Cannot open anything. Tapping on a category does nothing.
  • Family sharing is not really family sharing...

    By Wissmatt
Author says it’s “Apples sandbox” and that you can’t share subscriptions. Okay. Make the $17.99 a one time charge! Problem solved. It’s greedy of the author to use a subscription model for mostly static content. Please REMOVE that description portion that states it is is shareable by a family as it is NOT. The app is free so anyone can download it. No need to “share” the app. Also, the feedback portion of the app is broken. So they will not respond and read every comment if they can’t get the feedback... “Unable to send you feedback right now.” Is the constant error message. Overall good content that is tainted by deceptive marketing and blaming Apple.
